Suds and Sandals at Coastal Arts Market

Image
Hi, my name is Dottie; I am the owner of “Suds and Sandals”. I’ve been doing crafts since I was in my  early 20s when a friend taught me how to crochet. Well, that was the start of it all. Since then I have taught myself to knit and have taught myself many crochet stitches and learned how to read patterns. I also sew and have made all my grandkids their costume when they were little. I started making jewelry and that’s what started me in the craft shows. I’ve painted ceramics, quilling, and other various crafts. When I retired from Target I started doing craft shows. At my first craft show I sold for $8.45. That was so disappointing. But I didn’t let that sway me. I really wanted to sell my stuff. My husband started making soaps and joined me at the shows. Today I make soaps, lotions, lip balms, facial cleansers, etc. I make flea and tick spray and bug off for mosquitos. I make various ornaments and love the challenge it brings to come up with new projects. I love ma...

The Shedshop Studio

Image
The Shedshop Studio ~ Tad & Julie Burch  Tad Burch, an avid outdoorsman, has made the jump from plumbing to jewelry. Once his kids grew up, he decided to explore new passions and turned the Shed Shop Studio into a reality. Starting in his cellar, he explored making deer antlers, aka “sheds”, found while walking through the woods or fields, into rings. Now in his newly built shop, he has expanded his materials to include wood and resin. He crafts each ring into a beautiful piece of artwork that he and his wife, Julie, take pride in wearing. They hope to craft a unique experience for everyone who wears their rings.

Weekend Woodshop

Weekend Woodshop ~Hans Boecher Duty called and I served 24 years in the military. After retiring in 1992, I had an interest in woodwork so I started experimenting — furniture, painted wood, lighthouses, windmills, etc. I was reading a magazine about wood one day and ran across an article about intarsia. Intarsia is a thirteenth-century Italian art form consisting of mosaic pictures in wood. I decided to try my hand at this art form and before long I was hooked. In the beginning, it was more of a hobby. I made various pieces of intarsia and gave them away to family and friends. After a while, I began receiving phone calls from people who had seen my work and the idea began to form that I could sell my product. In 1998, I embarked on the art and craft show market and the rest is history! I use hard and soft wood (i.e. walnut, mahogany, cherry, pine, beech, holly, ash – to name a few) and exotic wood from Africa and South America. Some pictures have over 300 pieces. Each piece is car...

Where We Are Located and Market Dates

Image
The Coastal Arts Market is located at the beautiful Leonardtown Wharf  Park                 22500 Washington Street, Leonardtown, Maryland 20650 Local artisans come together one Saturday a month starting in April through June and  again in September through November to sell their hand-crafted items at this open-air market. All items sold must be handcrafted by the seller. This allows you the customer to meet the artist or maker and will enable you to find out about the process that's used in making the items and you can place custom orders for goods. This helps these artists and crafters to build a small cottage business that they can build on and expand in the future.  Remember shopping locally keeps your money in your community where it can do the most good. Buying American-made products is always a good thing. Watch the video and check the dates below.                 ...

Timeless Threadcraft ~ Nanacy Campbell

Image
My grandmother was the family seamstress while her three sisters and their daughters were the knitters, crocheters, and quilters. She didn’t learn those skills until she was in her sixties so I learned with her. I was fascinated by all of it as a child and to this day love the tactile sensations of working with yarn and the visual pleasure provided by color. The basic techniques are truly timeless as are many of the patterns. Part of the fun, however, is searching for new patterns and adapting them to add flair. No two pieces are exactly alike. My husband and I moved to Maryland from Wisconsin so he could pursue a graduate degree. We’ve lived in Sunderland in Calvert County for 32 years in a house built in 1920. Much of my working life has involved contract and business management with NASA and NOAA contractors. Needlework was my stress reliever and the source of many wedding and new baby gifts. Now I’m looking forward to turning a hobby into a small business, spending time with ...
